Cheapest Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc Player

Cheapest Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

One awesome DVD player from Sony!

I bought this BD DVD player BDP-S360 in last Black Friday online sale at Amazon. Since then I do not have a single complaint about it. It plays all kind of DVD so far. I tried the ripped of DVDs and it plays as good as the regular DVD and BD. I tried few DVDs from India (universal format) which were not running good on my old Toshiba up convertor DVD player but they run very well on this one. Just buy it do not think twice. It is an awesome player you might had so far. Blue Ray DVDs are really crisp quality picture and sound. Regular DVD are also appears to be good on this player. Happy watching!!

Buying Tip Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc Player

Buying Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

I really expected more.

Pros: The unit is very easy to set-up, perhaps outstanding, as each option has a clear on screen explaination.
So far at least the unit has played every disc I've put in without freezing or skipping, including discs I've burned and professional recordings.
The sound is good when used through a decent reciever amp.

Cons: As everyone else has suggested there is no eject button, I solved this problem by using my Logitech remote which automatically added an eject button, that works just fine.

The picture quality is only fair, too much sharpness at times, too much "noise" at other times, and almost always too much color. These things can be adjusted using the menu on the TV, but they varry from disc to disc and even within a disc, the unit does not seem able to adjust to different backgrounds.

The upconversion is poor, OK, I'm spoiled, I have an Oppo upconverting (standard DVD) and that is a difficult comparison, but I also have a run of the mill Toshiba and the picture on that unit has a better upconversion.

Everything about this unit is simply ordinary, other than the set-up. Nothing stands out, the picture of Blu Ray discs is OK, the sound is OK, the loading times are OK, not as bad as many have indicated, but not fast.

New!! Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray Player

Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Pros: Reasonably priced. Easy setup. Good e-support.

Cons: Unable to view DVD's with HDMI connection.

Summary:

When first connected to a two year old Philips 42" Plasma TV via the recommended HDMI cable. Upon switching on, there was a brief "splash" image showing the Blu-ray logo and then approximately 3-4 seconds of digital snow followed by 2-3 seconds blank (black) screen. This was continually repeated without being able to access the setup menu (Xross Media Bar).
Without another HDMI cable available I switched to component (YPbPr) video input where I was now able to set up the system as per the instructions.
Out of interest I then connected the HDMI cable to a newer Philips 19" LCD monitor. I was now able to access the setup menu and view a number of conventional DVD's automatically up-scaled to 1080p. Albeit a relatively small image, I considered the results to be very good.
On the assumption that the 42" TV may have a defective HDMI port I made one further test. This time with a Philips 32" LCD HDTV of the same vintage as the 42" referred to above. Once again the HDMI input did not work where the component video does.

Although the BDP-S360 may work as generally described in these reviews I cannot give a more positive opinion as there may be a problem when attempting to connect to some older HDTV's via the HDMI cable.
The fact that the Philips 19" LCD monitor does support HDMI Version 1.3a (So stated in their user manual) leads me to believe the two year old Philips HDTV's cannot recognize the Sony HDMI signal. While HDMI revisions are supposed to be backward compatible it is possible some firmware or hardware configuration may prevent this.
